Oily skin produces excessive amounts of sebum, a lipid-rich protective substance. A good thing about oily skin is that it is usually well-moisturized due to its own protective oil. The downside is that it may look shiny or dirty and tends to develop large pores and be prone to acne.
If you have an oily type of a skin, you have to follow such recommendations:
• Wash your skin two times a day with a cleanser, that includes salicylic acid, a beta-hydroxyl acid that reduces sebum production.
• If you skin is oily even after washing with a cleanser, you need to use toner which contains salicylic acid. People with normal skin should avoid cleansers and toners with salicylic acid due to the drying effect of this substance. However, for such cases of oily skin, you may just do the exception.
• Commonly, people with oily skin shouldn't moisten their skin. If you need to do this, apply noncomedogenic, nonocclusive, oil-free moisturizer after cleansing.
• Use oil-free, noncomedogenic sunscreen whenever sun exposure is expected.
• If the above steps are insufficient and your skin is still producing too much oil, try treatments that reduce sebum production. They include vitamin A creams, which contain retinal, retinol or retinyl palmitate, sulfur creams, azeleic acid and retinoids such as adapalene, tretinoin and tazarotene. High-strength sulfur creams, retinoids used by a prescription. If your oil problem is so bad that you are considering prescription treatments, you should see a dermatologist anyway.
• Some people with oily skin may use clay/mud mask once a week.
