Combination Skin

combination_skin  People with combination skin usually have dry cheeks, oily forehead and nose area (T-zone). Combination skin is often an example of the skin condition called seborrhea that includes seborrheic dermatitis and seborrheic eczema. The major sign of seborrhea is overproduction of oil on the scalp and face. Many patients with seborrhea also have yeast overgrowth, especially on the scalp and eyebrow areas. It often causes irritation, dandruff, itch and other problems. You may want to see a dermatologist to determine whether you have seborrhea or related conditions.

If you have a combination skin, you have to follow such recommendations:

• Take care of oily and dry areas differently. Take care of your scalp as well.

• Wash your skin with a mild cleanser twice a day. Use a free of soap cleanser, which doesn’t include alcohol or harsh detergents. Ideal cleanser should contain an oil production reducing agent, such as salicylic acid.

• Use anti-dandruff shampoos such as pyrithione zinc or selenium sulfide shampoos or anti-yeast shampoos such as ketoconazole shampoo. Use every other day until dandruff and other symptoms are under control; use twice a week after that.

• After washing, use oil-free moisturizer (for dry areas only). You can also use oil-free moisturizer to dry areas throughout the day as needed.

• Apply oil-free sunscreen whenever sun exposure is expected.

• Some individuals with combination skin may benefit from a combination of two masks used once a week. A clay mask is applied to the oily area and a moisturizing mask - to the dry areas.
